The
American Gem Society's Diamond Cut Grade System
and its Supporting Technology
Speaker:
Patrick B. Stout
Education Services Manager at the American Gem Society
Before joining the AGS
in August 2005, Patrick spent nearly twenty-five years in the
retail sector in various sales and management positions with
firms such as Ben Bridge Jeweler and Tiffany & Co. He has
been a member of the American Gem Society since 1988, becoming
a Certified Gemologist in 1989 and a Certified Gemologist Appraiser
in 1998. He also is a GIA Graduate Gemologist.
The American Gem Society
Diamond Cut Grade System is supported by the "Angular Spectrum
Evaluation Tools", better known simply as "The ASET
Tools". These tools allow you to demonstrate, in vivid
color, how efficiently a diamond is using light. It's accurate.
It's easy. It's fast. It's fun. These tools help you to take
the guesswork out of the subject of diamond cutting for your
clients and allow you to demonstrate and describe "Cut"
in a way that clients can easily comprehend, without boring
them to death with overly technical explanations. At the same
time, the nature of this cutting-edge technology will greatly
appeal to your more "techie" clients. Five patents
have been awarded covering this system from research to reality.
In this presentation,
you will learn about this revolutionary system and the tools
that can explain light performance in red, blue, and green.
Come learn and discuss the advantages of using this technology
in your diamond sales presentations.
B.Y.O.D! Bring Your
Own Diamond! Bring along a diamond or two out of your own inventory
and see how it performs in the ASET tools.

The above link provides an excellent
explanation on the parameters for the new Diamond Cut Grade.
The new Diamond Lab Manual
is also extremely helpful in understanding the concepts of
the system. This manual can be purchased through the GIA for
$50.00. There are a couple of mistakes in the new manual that
the GIA will not have the opportunity to correct with this
printing. They are:

% no longer has a grade for anything below 2.5.
