Honored by the
American Gem Society
Rick Velayo was among eight
American Gem Society (AGS) titleholders who have been given
the very prestigious Fellow Award, an annual award recognizing
outstanding contributions and service to the jewelry profession,
the AGS and the recipient's community!
In alphabetical order, the award winners were:
Cos Altobelli, Certified Gemologist Appraiser, Altobelli Jewelers;
Serge Boro, Vintage Registered Supplier, formerly of Lazare
Kaplan; Marcelia Cruz-Hicks, Certified Gemologist, Diaco Diamonds
Inc.; Susan Jaime, Registered Jeweler, Ben Bridge Jeweler; Gary
J. Long, Registered Jeweler, Gary J. Long Jewelers; Gene Spratford,
Registered Jeweler, Spratford Fine Jewelry; Rick Velayo, Certified
Gemologist Appraiser, Gleim the Jeweler; Harton Wolf, Certified
Gemologist Appraiser, Henne Jewelers.
Nominations for the Fellow Award were nominated
from AGS members, with nominees and supporting materials being
reviewed by the Fellows Committee. The accomplishments being
honored were contributions in gemology, education, administration,
philanthropy, community service and service to the profession.

The Marraige of iPod technology
with GIA's Continuing
Education
Patrick Ball
of GIA Education is developing podcasts on Gemological
topics, that will be available to everyone. The most recent
Podcast shows a glimpse of the Symposium with several of our
Golden Gate Alumni in it. Following is the info you will need
to download the Itunes software necessary to view the podcasts.
Once you have downloaded it, the GIA podcasts will be available
by clicking on the Symposium (currently available: "Jewelry
Industry Trends") or future event or topic you are interested
in. Check it out. Soon we will have treatment and identification
information that is second to none, available to all, free of
charge!

The above link provides an excellent
explanation on the parameters for the new Diamond Cut Grade.
The new Diamond Lab Manual
is also extremely helpful in understanding the concepts of
the system. This manual can be purchased through the GIA for
$50.00. There are a couple of mistakes in the new manual that
the GIA will not have the opportunity to correct with this
printing. They are:
Page 62: Chart for Girdle Thickness
% no longer has a grade for anything below 2.5.
Page 61: Diamond Cut Grades
& Pavilion Angles:
EX,VG, G, F, P: 40.6° to 41.8°
VG,G,F,P: 39.8° to 40.4°
Page 54 & 55: Painting
& Digging Out:
Poor has been eliminated.
